From 24 to 28 August 2024, the annual conference of the International Association for Health Professions Education (AMEE) was held at Messe und Congress Center Basel. A total of 3,319 visitors were welcomed at the venue and a further 674 via online channels. The organisers seem to be fond of Basel, since this is now the second time that they have opted to stage their event in this city on the Rhine.

The main part of the conference, which is aimed at healthcare professionals, was held from Monday to Wednesday. A number of small-scale parallel sessions and workshops were offered, while plenary sessions took place in the Event Hall, including one with Jim Campell, director of the WHO Health Workforce. Attendees also had the opportunity to participate in pre-conference workshops on the Saturday and Sunday. The Sunday evening additionally featured an opening session, with a welcome by Lukas Engelberger, a member of the Basel City cantonal government. After this, guests were able to enjoy exciting keynote speeches, first-class entertainment with the ‘Stickstoff’ drumming group and a networking reception on the second floor of the Foyer and in Hall 4.1. An exhibition covering 575 m2 was staged in this Hall for the duration of the conference.

Alongside the official programme, the players of the event city of Basel also came up with numerous ideas. Basel Tourism set up a welcome desk at EuroAirport Basel on the main arrival days. Trained personnel were available to answer questions at Basel SBB railway station. And the tourism organisation was also present with an information stand at the Congress Center Basel from Monday to Wednesday.

But that’s not all – the Basel Convention Bureau also ensured that participants were kept on the move, offering a Rhine swimming event, a morning workout on the soccer pitch, a fun run through Basel and a yoga session at the Congress Center Basel. ‘We are convinced that this enabled us to present not only our premises but also the city itself in the best light,’ explains Christian Ortlepp, Director Guest Events at MCH Exhibitions and Events. “’We are very happy about this, since we wanted to make sure that guests had just as fond memories of the second AMEE conference in Basel as they did of the first one.’
